Shrops U17 Boys Win

After a couple of withdrawals through illness and club call ups, we were left with a squad of 15 (with two keepers).

Our draw saw us face Staffordshire first, who only had 9 players, although you wouldn’t have known it. Result 0-0.

Derbyshire next and the boys had all woken up. Ollie (2), Ben and Zak made it a 4-1 win for Shropshire.

Nottinghamshire next and another good show. George (2) and Zak, 3-0 win.

Leicestershire was a harder match. Ollie opened the scoring, before Leicester pulled one back. Zak made it 2-1 in the last few mins to keep up the unbeaten record.

Worcestershire. Ollie scored for us, but the drama wasn’t over cards were shown and for a minute or so there were only 9 players hung on and the match finished a 1-1 draw.

Northamptonshire saw George get a hat-trick of drag flicks and all but sealed the title for Shropshire. 3-0.

Last up were Warwickshire knowing a win would give Shropshire the title. A nervous start was eased when Ollie bagged another two goals and Brad pulled off the save of the day.

Unbeaten Shropshire were crowned U17 Boys Midlands Champions 2022.

Little rural Shropshire top of the tree against the big counties is something to be very proud of.

A big thankyou from me to all the boys. I have really enjoyed being part of the team for the 5 years I’ve been involved as manager. To sign off with a tournament win is amazing.

Thanks to you the parents for the support and the hours you’ve put in driving to matches/training and watching in the wet & cold.

Thanks to Matt for this year and Tom, Simon and Sandra for the previous years, and of course John and Jules for organizing everything.

U17 Boys and Girls great performance at Midlands tournament

On what may have been the last Sunday of Hockey for a while the Midlands Counties Tournaments for U17 Boys and Girls squeezed in to the Calendar on Sunday 15th March 2020

The U17 Boys squad had a tough first match losing 0-1 to Derbyshire but then posting a 2-1 win over Leics and a 1-0 win over Warks. The final was a replay against Derbyshire with Shrops losing 0-1 to Derbyshire in the last 2 mins. A very entertaining final and top effort by all the U17 lads. Not bad for little Shropshire.

The U17 Girls Midlands County tournament saw them go that one step further, Shrops convincingly winning their pool, with a 4-0 win over Warks followed by a 5-0 win against Worcs. Then followed a controlling 1-0 win against Derbys in the semi-final. In the finals against Notts a well taken solitary goal by Megan Pennell gave the Shropshire side the win and title. Coach Chris Prosser said this was a really top day for Shropshire with good performances all over the park. The coach placed the emphasis on performance over result and this led to the win.

The Yellow Shirts of Shropshire are proudly worn by all players and these fantastic results for a small rural county and a tribute to all involved in the Shropshire Academy Centre (County) programme and the schools and clubs that get these players started.

U17 Girls

Hickinbottom Aimee, Hood Jess, Farmer Amelia, Heath Vikki, Munro Georgia, Edwards Millie.

Coach Chris Prosser, Manager Jon Pennell.

U17 Boys

Coach Matt Martin, Manager James Childs

Shropshire Academy Hockey and Covid 19

With immediate effect all Academy Centre (County) hockey is suspended until at least 15th April 2020.

Please see the link to the England hockey website with more details

http://www.englandhockey.co.uk/news.asp?itemid=49019&itemTitle=England+Hockey+suspends+national+hockey+activity&section=22

However please note that the following dates were in the programme. It is extremely unlikely that these will take place.

19th April

U13 & U15 tournament at a venue TBA

3rd May

U13 tournament at a venue TBA

We await some more details from the Midlands group as to the possibility of rescheduling these tournaments but there are often problems with pitch availability and clashes with other events.

The Hockey Development Centres that run in the Summer term will be rescheduled as appropriate.

There is normally an AC Hockey presentation evening, at the end of the season. This is currently scheduled for Fri 26th June.

On a positive note the Girls and Boys U17 Midlands tournaments did take place on Sun 15th March. The boys did extremely well losing, in the last 2 mins of the final, to Derbyshire. The Girls managed to go that one step further with a 1-0 win over Notts, in the final, taking the trophy. These are tremendous results for a small rural county. Congratulations to all involved in the Shropshire AC programme and the schools and clubs that get these players started.

Please follow the health advice of the government and health professionals and stay safe and well.

Jules ONeill and John Beckett (AC managers)

Sarah Ralphs (Head coach)

Ladies Masters become National Final winners

Telford and Wrekin Ladies were celebrating in style at the weekend after winning the England Hockey Women’s Masters Over 35’s Shield. The team travelled to play at Lee Valley Hockey and The Tennis Centre on the ‘smurf turf’ Olympic pitches against Redbridge and Ilford.

The team made a slow start to the game and found themselves a goal down in the fourth minute after Redbridge’s Bron Woods scored from a short corner. Shortly afterwards, Telford’s influential defender Karen Jackson was forced to leave the field to have a blood injury attended to after being struck in the face with a stick. The team rallied, and after Jackson returned to the field they were able to settle in to the match. Telford and Wrekin pressed forward, and a well-crafted goal from Chez Lane saw the teams level at the break.

The second half saw Telford and Wrekin have the greater share of possession, but some determined play from Lisa Lory in the Redbridge goal kept the scores level. With Telford pushing forward, Redbridge were able to take advantage of their pace up front and had a number of attacking breaks, but they were prevented from scoring by some well-timed tackles by Jackson and Shirley Hasenauer in defence, and some excellent saves from Amanda Bailey in the Telford goal. With only seven minutes on the clock, and a penalty shoot-out looming, a Chez Lane strike was tapped in by Lorna Burns to take the Telford side into the lead for the first time in the match. The lead was extended minutes later when a lifted shot from Burns struck the keeper and looped in to the goal, giving Telford and Wrekin a well-earned 3-1 victory.

Captain Sandra Pattinson said ‘ It was a great game, with two well-matched teams battling it out. After a rocky start we felt that we were capable of winning, and just needed to play our own game. I’m extremely proud of the team - it was a fantastic effort from everyone in the squad and a momentous occasion for our club, who hadn’t been to a national final before’.

The team was: Jen Woodyard, Rachel Evans, Karen Jackson, Dawn Moogan, Sarah McKaig, Chez Lane, Shirley Hasenauer, Sue Hughes, Angie Bithell, Kirsty Greenhead, Lorna Burns, Sandra Pattinson (captain), Charlotte Machin, Gilly Hartley, Michelle Warner, Amanda Bailey, Jayne Parnham (Manager), Lorna Mackenzie (coach)
